I’m obsessed with celestial anything-and-everything. I feel a natural pull towards watching the stars and catching the moon whenever she’s out, in the same way that I’m hypnotized by waves at the beach or a crackling fire.
When I was younger, my love of the moon and stars overlapped perfectly with my interest in Roman and Greek mythology, and when you mixed in my love of stories with female heroes, it’s little surprise that I was obsessed with the TV show “Sailor Moon.”
In this Japanese anime from the mid 90s (a golden age for cartoons! Or maybe I’m just biased?), a moon princess is sent to Earth along with her guardian, a little black cat named Luna. Princesses from every planet transformed into Sailor Scouts to fight evil across the universe using magic spells and otherworldly weapons.
I mean, it ticked all the boxes for me: a space epic starring female protagonists, characters loosely based on mythology, and amazing (if not gravity-defying) hair.
All of this was stewing in my brain when I was thinking about making this new collection. I wanted to represent the brilliant, dreamy Moon Kingdom in icy white diamonds; the little black cat, Luna, could show up in black and salt & pepper diamonds; an upturned crescent moon for the mark on Luna the cat’s forehead marking where she came from.
The collection turned into pieces capturing the night sky, representing the moon in its many phases, and winking at its magical guardians. Even if the original TV show missed you completely, I hope you find something to love in the Luna collection.
